Depression is a serious problem, period. The world witnesses almost a million suicides each year due to untreated depression, and according to estimates by the World Health Organization, about 3.8% of the entire world’s population is affected by it, including 5% among all adults and 5.7% among senior citizens.

While the general idea of ‘how to define depression’ largely still remains a social paradox for successive generations, it gets even harder to solve when approached with rigidity. Traditionally, the treatment of depression that has been diagnosed as clinical, is supported by various forms of medication, from the dreaded days of Prozac, to the more ‘sophisticated’ variants such as Cepralex, Haliperidol, and other chemical stimulants / inhibitors which work by limiting brain functions that are responsible for the body to understand how it’s feeling. And while these medications are not supposed to be sold without valid medical prescriptions, the rampant abuse of such drugs can be attributed mainly to the blind-sided approach that most people follow when attempting to fight something that they don’t completely understand.

The trouble is, if this type of medication is practiced unsupervised. then a patient of depression is susceptible to various side effects and potentially fatal withdrawal symptoms. It is a matter of severe irony, that one of the most common withdrawal symptoms of most anti-depressants is (drumroll please) suicidal behavior!

Non-medicinal therapy is available today, but the scaterred and disorganized nature of such services makes it very difficult for the right candidate to find the right counselor in the right location at the right time. Here, it becomes very important for patients & caregivers to be aware of non-invasive and non-medicinal approaches that can significantly improve mental health.

But there’s a lot more happening under the surface when you binge-watch an hour or more of gruesome deaths. Many reports have suggested that unsettling movies are a great genre choice to watch with family and friends as it helps build a bonding experience for everyone, since everybody is tuning into the same emotions. It also provides relief with a clear and crucial element of control, triggers an adrenaline rush and consequently elevates mood. Not just that, watching horror movies also shifts the viewer’s worries away from the self and towards the (usually running & screaming) characters on screen, effectively ending an anxiety episode by the time such a movie ends.
